Frequently asked questions

Have questions about starting therapy? Here are answers to some common questions. If you don't see what you're looking for, feel free to reach out.

Getting started

What happens in the first session?

Your first session (intake) is about getting to know each other. I'll ask about what brings you to therapy, your history, your goals, and what you're hoping for. You'll also have time to ask me questions and get a sense of whether we're a good fit. For kids and teens, I typically meet with parents first or jointly.

Do you offer telehealth and in-person sessions?

Yes! I offer both telehealth (video) sessions for anyone located in Minnesota, and in-person sessions at my Maple Grove office. Many clients choose a hybrid approach based on their schedule and preferences.

How long does therapy typically last?

It depends on your goals and what you're working on. Some clients come for a few months to address a specific issue, while others benefit from longer-term support. We'll regularly check in about your progress and adjust as needed.

Insurance & payment

Do you take my insurance?

I am currently in-network with select insurance plans. Please contact me to verify your coverage before scheduling. If I'm not in-network with your plan, I can provide superbills for potential out-of-network reimbursement.

What if I'm out-of-network?

Many PPO plans offer out-of-network benefits that cover a portion of therapy costs. I provide superbills (detailed receipts) that you can submit to your insurance for potential reimbursement. Contact your insurance to ask about your out-of-network mental health benefits.

Do you accept HSA/FSA?

Yes! I accept Health Savings Account (HSA) and Flexible Spending Account (FSA) cards. Therapy is typically an eligible expense under these accounts.

Scheduling & cancellations

What are your office hours?

I offer sessions during daytime and some evening hours. Specific availability varies. Please contact me to discuss scheduling options that work for you.

What is your cancellation policy?

Please provide at least 24 hours notice if you need to cancel or reschedule. Cancellations with less than 24 hours notice, or missed appointments, are subject to a $100 fee. I understand emergencies happen; if you're facing an urgent situation, please reach out and we can discuss.

Kids & teens

Do you meet with my child alone or with me?

It depends on the child's age and needs. For younger children, I often include parents in sessions or have regular parent check-ins. For teens, I typically meet individually but maintain communication with parents about progress (while respecting the teen's confidentiality on personal matters).

How involved are parents in treatment?

Very involved! Even when I meet individually with a child or teen, I schedule regular parent sessions to share strategies, discuss progress, and support you in supporting your child. Parenting a neurodivergent kid is hard, you deserve support too.

What ages do you work with?

I work with children ages 7 and up, teens, and adults. For children under 7, I'm happy to provide referrals to colleagues who specialize in early childhood.

Crisis & safety

What should I do if I'm in crisis?

If you are in immediate danger or experiencing a mental health emergency, please call 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline), dial 911, or go to your nearest emergency room. You can also text HOME to 741741 to reach the Crisis Text Line. Specthrive Wellness & Behavioral Health is not a 24/7 crisis service.

What if I'm having thoughts of suicide?

Please reach out for help immediately. Call 988 to speak with a trained crisis counselor, or go to your nearest emergency room. If you're my current client and having a crisis during business hours, please call the office and let me know, but for immediate safety, always contact emergency services first.
